What is remembered lives, and unto them may there be granted the accomplishment of their wills.

Hermetic Library in Memoriam Charles Cameron

Charles Cameron passed in 2020. We hadn’t been in communication for a while, and I only recently found out. Charles Cameron and I never met, but we connected over the mirror for Hipbone Games, for which he gave permissions and several times expressed thanks for it being done. I have now moved the mirror from Reflections to a place for Charles as one of the library’s historical Figures. If nothing else, you may want to check out his work on HipBone, his idea for playing Hermann Hesse‘s Glass Bead Game. But you may also consider gandering at Charles Cameron: A life well worn, a mini biography for more of an impression of the man and his life, and the rest of his site.

You can read some more personal recollections at Zenpundit, where he was an editor and blogger, by Mark Safranski at “Charles Cameron, In Memoriam“—”I regret to inform readers of Zenpundit.com and especially those here who are fans of Charles, that he has passed away after years of struggling with health issues. In Charles Cameron, the world has lost a brilliant voice and is much the poorer for it.” And, by Emlyn Cameron, his daughter, at “Ashes in California: A reflection on the end of my father“—”People say that the dead are ‘gone,’ but I believe ‘over’ is more appropriate. The aspect of people we love, their character and personality, is like a tremendous event occurring briefly. And, though his heart was still working, the tender spectacle of my father was over.” There’s also a comment from Anne Merino on Emlyn’s recollection: “I am happy to report that Charles’ huge and varied library has found a home with two old friends of Charles who also happen to be highly regarded experts in rare books. They will [be] placing Charles’ collection of books and papers with universities where scholars can appreciate them.”
